15 The Mighty Angel

The sixth trumpet leads us up to the time of August 11, 1840. Right after this, we have a change in the scene but it is a continuation of what we have studied in the previous chapter. The reason is because the seventh trumpet has not sounded.

  • It is just like the sixth and seventh seal. The sixth seal is opened in Revelation chapter 6 and the seventh seal is opened in Revelation 8. It only makes sense that chapter 7 is a continuation of the sixth seal.
  • Take note – the 6th trumpet has not ended yet though.
  • Revelation 10 and most of chapter 11 is part of the 6th

Revelation 10:1
And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

Who is this mighty angel that comes down from heaven?

  • This must be Jesus.
  • How do we know? Because the details that we see that is describing this mighty angel is what we see that is used to describe Jesus.

“clothed with a cloud”

  • Revelation 1:7
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
  • Clouds represent angels (Psalms 104:3; Psalms 68:17).
  • This angel is surrounded by other angels.
  • The only angel that is surrounded by other angels is Jesus.

“a rainbow was upon his head”

  • Revelation 4:3
And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
  • Whilst this was not talking about Jesus in Revelation 4, it was referring to God the Father. It was not an angel sitting on that throne.

“face was as it were the sun”

  • Revelation 1:16
And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
  • This is describing Jesus in Revelation 1 when He is standing at the golden candlestick.

“his feet as pillars of fire”

  • Revelation 1:15
And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
  • A very similar description to Jesus in Revelation 1.

There is no doubt that this mighty angel that comes down in Revelation 10 is none other than Jesus Christ. All the descriptions match other places that we have found referencing Christ or God. It is most certainly not a literal angel sent from heaven.

Why is Jesus described as an angel here though? This is not the first time that the symbol of an angel is used to represent Jesus. We saw Him at the altar of incense as well in Revelation 8 being called an angel.

  • The word angel means messenger.
  • So Christ has come to give a message to us.

What is the purpose of the descriptions of Christ here though? Through the symbols of how John sees Him, Christ is giving to us a message already.

The Cloud Message

  • As we saw earlier in Revelation 1:7, the Bible says that Christ is coming with clouds.
  • The could message is pointing us to the second coming.
  • The people living at the time around 1840 will be aroused to the message of the second coming of Christ.

The Rainbow Message

  • The first rainbow was the covenant that God gave to Noah that He would not destroy the world by a flood anymore.
    • Genesis 9:12-13
12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
  • That message, though still relevant to us today, is not the only covenant that God wishes to make with us who are living at the present time. What other covenant do we see that God wants to make with us today?
    • Hebrews 10:16
This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.
  • The rainbow message is about God’s new covenant with us. He wants us to remember His law. And there is specifically one law that He wants us to remember and not forget. It is to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

The Sun Message

  • Malachi 4:2
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings…
  • The sun represents righteousness.
  • Romans 8:3-4
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
  • The righteousness of Christ is the righteousness found in the law. The two cannot be separated.
  • The sun message is pointing to the law of God, the ten

The Pillars of Fire Message

  • Where do we see pillars of fire in the Bible? It was in relation to that time that God was leading the children of Israel from Egypt to Canaan. The pillar of fire appeared at night to them, and the pillar of cloud guided them by the day.
  • Exodus 13:21-22
21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

    • It guided the people.
  • Exodus 14:24
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians.

    • It also protected them as well.
  • After being delivered from the Egyptians by God, the children of Israel had a great rejoicing experience. A few days later, they could come to a place that God would guide them to through the pillar of cloud and pillar of fire.
  • Exodus 15:23
And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.

    • God would lead them to a bitter experience. For what reason? To test them and to try them. To teach them to trust in Him no matter the outcome.
  • And we see a bitter experience here in Revelation 10.
  • Revelation 10:9
And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
  • So this picture of the pillars of fire is describing how God’s people would be guided through a bitter experience by God Himself. Their faith will go through fiery trials.

So this mighty angel has many messages for those living in 1840 and beyond:

  • The second coming.
  • The Sabbath.
  • The 10 commandments.
  • The guidance of God to and through a bitter experience.

Let’s continue on in Revelation 10.

Revelation 10:2
And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

The mighty angel has in his hand a little book that is open.

  • It cannot be the book that is sealed with seven seals because at 1840 the book is not totally opened yet. The seventh seal has not been unsealed yet. That will be unsealed at the second coming.
  • So what other book do we know was closed that had to be opened around the time of 1840?
    • The book of Daniel. It was sealed before.
  • Daniel 12:4
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

    • The book of Daniel was shut up, it was sealed until the time of the end.
  • When is the time of the end, because this is the time that the book of Daniel would be opened.
    • Daniel 12:9
And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
    • The book would be sealed until the time of the end.
    • Daniel 11:35-37
35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. 36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. 37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
    • This is describing the time of the papacy in the dark ages when they were killing people and making many martyrs.
    • They would be allowed to do this until the time of the end.
    • When did the actual persecution stop? 1798.
    • So the time of the end is 1798.
  • So it is around the time of 1798 that the book of Daniel began to be unsealed or opened.
  • And this mighty angel in Revelation 10, whom we know to be Jesus, He must have in His hand the book of Daniel.

However, not the whole book of Daniel was sealed.

  • During the dark ages, Martin Luther pointed out the little horn power of Daniel 7 to be the Roman Catholic Church. He understood the book of Daniel.
  • What was sealed?
    • It was the portion in Daniel 8 relating to the 2300 day prophecy that even Daniel himself fainted for lack of understanding.
  • So in Revelation 10, when the mighty angel comes down with this little book open, it is the unsealing of that book Daniel in relation to the 2300 day prophecy.
  • And where are we in time at this moment?
  • The end of Revelation 9, we looked at that 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month and 1 year prophecy in the sixth trumpet.
    • It brought us up until August 11, 1840.
  • It is at this time that the revivals taking place under the preaching of William Miller and his interpretation of Daniel 8 is making rapid strides throughout the United States of America. People were getting converted.
    • The fulfillment of the stars falling from heaven.
    • And the fulfillment the prediction of Josiah Litch with the fall of the Ottoman empire, gave William Miller’s preaching more power.
  • People, though they remembered the text that no man knows the day or the hour of Christ’s coming, there was no denying the figures and calculations of Miller in relation to time.
  • And October 22, 1844 – the conclusion of the 2300 day prophecy, was just a few short years away!

Coming back to Revelation 10:2 though:

  • Revelation 10:2
And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,
  • This angel sets his foot on the earth and on the sea.
  • It was a message that was to go to the whole world. This was the impact that this message was to have.

Revelation 10:3
And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

  • Who does the lion represent?
    • Revelation 5:5
And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
    • It is Jesus. And the lion represented the tribe of Judah, the root of David.
  • What do we understand about David in Revelation?
    • Revelation 3:7
      And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
    • We see the key of David.
    • And when we studied that, we discovered that the key of David was connected with judgment. It was the key to his throne room.
  • So the roaring lion is speaking about something in relation to time, to judgment – which is exactly what we see unfolding close to 1840. 1844, the investigative judgment beginning.
  • Please make sure to go back to the book of Daniel, and in particular chapter 8, to understand how we came to that conclusion.

Revelation 10:4
And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

John was about to write down what the seven thunders uttered, but he was instructed not to write it down. It was to remain a mystery. So let’s continue.

Revelation 10:5-6
5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, 6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

The mighty angel lifts up his hand and swears by God one thing – that there would no longer be anymore time.

What is this referring to? What does it mean that there should be time no longer?

Firstly, we saw that the unsealing of the book of Daniel was in relation to time. 2300 days.

  • So after this, there is no more time prophecies.
  • Why is that? What would happen right after this?

Revelation 10:7
But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

So why would there be no more time?

  • At the conclusion of the 2300 day prophecy, the seventh angel would begin to sound.
  • And we are told that at the sounding of the seventh angel, the mystery of God should be finished.

So why is it that there would be no more time prophecies after 1844? It is because Jesus can come any time after that. Let’s have a look at the mystery of God. What is that referring to?

  • There are a few mysteries of God that the Bible talks about.
  • There is the first coming of Christ as a human and a sacrifice. But that is not relevant to the seventh trumpet around 1844.
  • Ephesians 1:9-10
9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
  • The mystery of God is how Christ will gather together in one all things in Him which are in heaven and are on earth.
  • That is referring to the time of the second coming.
  • So this is how we know that at the sounding of the seventh trumpet, that there would be time no longer.
  • No more time prophecies.
  • And there should be no more time as well because Jesus should be coming.
  • Which means we are living very close to the fulfillment of the seventh trumpet.
  • Another text about the mystery of God:
    • 1 Corinthians 15:51-52
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
    • This will take place at the second coming.
    • It lines up with what was said in the book of Ephesians.

Let’s fast forward to the seventh trumpet being sounded.

  • Revelation 11:15
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
  • When does the kingdoms of the world become the kingdoms of our Lord? That’s at the second coming.
  • So the seventh trumpet lines up with the seventh seal being opened where there is silence in heaven for about the space of half an hour.
  • So just as we are living still in the sixth seal, we are still living in the time of the sixth trumpet as well.

Now let’s come back to Revelation 10.

Revelation 10:8-10
8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. 9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. 10 And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

John is now instructed to take the book and eat it. And when he eats it, it would be sweet as honey in his mouth, but then it would become bitter in his stomach. And then he was instructed to prophecy again before many peoples, nations, tongues and kings.

The little book is the book of Daniel. More specifically, it is the understanding of the 2300 days. So when he ate the prophecy of the 2300 days it was sweet. The first encounter, viewing, seeing and teaching – it was sweet. What made it sweet?

  • The calculation of the date in the 2300 days in Daniel was But they misunderstood the event.
  • But there were great revivals. There was change sweeping through the lives of many people.
  • Many people were changing and waiting for the second coming. No more death. No more poverty. No more tired bones.

But when the calculated date of October 22, 1844, arrived and Jesus did not come, there was a great disappointment. It was a bitter experience.

  • Can you imagine that this event had been hyped up for years! It wasn’t just days or weeks or months, but for years this message had been preached. People were leaving the other churches to join this group in eager expectation of the second coming of Jesus.
  • 50,000 people were waiting for the second coming of the Lord in 1844. After that night, only 50 people accepted the bitter disappointment as medicine to teach them the truth of God. The rest did not continue in Christ.
  • The mocking only increased from others around them. And it was revealed that the faith of many people were rooted in others and not in the word of God.

Humbly, this small group had to go back and go over the ground of what had been studied and what had been preached.

  • They came to the understanding just as what we have in Daniel 8 when we studied it, that the reckoning of time was correct.
  • The time period of 2300 days was correct.
  • The dates were correct.

But what they discovered was that the event was wrong.

  • They had overlooked the verse in Daniel 7.
  • Daniel 7:13
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
  • The son of man, Jesus, came in the clouds of heaven – not to earth, but to the Ancient of days.
  • The clouds of heaven in other verses pointed to the second coming like what we read in Revelation 1:7 – behold He cometh with clouds.
  • But not so in Daniel 7. Want to discover what that meant? You need to go back and listen to the Daniel Masterclass on the book of Daniel.
  • In their disappointment they had to go over the ground of what they had believed to figure out why Jesus didn’t come for a second time on October 22, 1844.
  • They had no choice. It was either that or throw away everything they had ever believed like many around them.
  • It was a trying experience from within – their disappointments. But it was trying as well from others throwing mockery at them.

However, when they came to this new understanding, there was another instruction given to them.

Revelation 10:11
And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

They were instructed to go out and preach again. To share the light that God had shone on their path.

  • The work had not been finished yet. There was still a mission of great importance to share the everlasting gospel to the whole world before Jesus could come for a second time in the clouds of glory.
  • And today, that is our mission. That is the work that God has set before every Christian who claims to follow Jesus.
  • To preach the gospel. The everlasting gospel found in Revelation 14.
  • Nothing else is to distract us from this one aim.
  • We are all bought with a price. We have all been called.
  • We are all to be lights that are set on a hill to shine the light of God’s glory.
  • We are all called to be the salt of the earth.
  • We are all to be ambassadors for Christ.
  • And anything short of that is to fall short of the name of the Christian – the follower of Christ.

Prophecy gives us a clear mission and purpose in this life. It’s not just to stir us up to the times that we are living in and give us motivation to do the things that we know we should be doing. But it is to give us clear direction as to what exactly we need to be doing in this time.

Thou must prophesy AGAIN before many peoples, nations, tongues and kings.
